When building new residential buildings and offices, some kind of strengthening of the soil’s bearing capacity is often needed as the load from the new house is greater than what the existing ground can withstand. The most common method used today is piling and the most common type in Sweden is the prefabricated concrete pile that is driven into the ground. The energy pile does just that – enables the construction of the new house by carrying the load BUT can also extract and transport energy up and down to/from the new building! This has several advantages, but the two most important ones are 1. the energy pile contributes energy to the house 2. the energy pile reduces the climate footprint. The Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning (Boverket) has submitted a proposal to the government that from January 1, 2027, the foundation of new buildings will also be included in the climate declaration of the newly built house.
